Living in Ardnamurchan
If you are looking for a job in Ardnamurchan you are either homesick or looking for a major lifestyle change.
This is a remote and stunning piece of the West Highlands, to live here is to embrace a special way of life. During your morning commute it will be a bad day when a traffic jam contains as many as seven vehicles and you will see more deer than pedestrians.
To be pedantic, Ardnamurchan is the name of the peninsula beyond Salen and Acharacle villages but over the years the name has grown to embrace a number of other villages.
The area has one of the highest concentrations of Gaelic-speakers on the mainland and they take their shinty very seriously; Ardnamurchan Camanachd also has a ladies team.
For much of its length the main route into Ardnamurchan is single-track; there are ferry link across the Sound of Mull from Kilchoan to Tobermory and across the Corran Sound.
Fort William is the nearest major centre with a railway station, supermarkets and major retail chains. (Fact: the kids in remote Ardnamurchan are nearer to a Mcdonalds’ than most of their contemporaries in neighbouring Argyll). Once on the A82 at Corran Ferry, Glasgow is under two-and-a-half-hours away.
Ardnamurchan High School also draws its pupils from the Morvern area and takes S1-6 pupils, offering Gaelic-medium education and at just over 100 pupils has the kind of class sizes people elsewhere can only dream about. Children from the more remote villages are boarders. Music is at the heart of Gaelic culture and the school has produced some remarkably talented young people from an area of stunning natural beauty with a great sense of community.
