Living in Rothes
Own up now – who would not want to live in a town where the electricity is powered by whisky?
Rothes in Moray is on the banks of the River Spey so you can expect whisky to be produced nearby. A biomass plant was opened in 2013 which burns a combination of distillery by-products and wood chips and can generate enough electricity to power up to 9,000 homes. The distilleries in and around Rothes are Speyburn-Glenlivet, Glen Grant, one of the best-selling in the world; Glen Spey and Glenrothes; another Caperdonich was mothballed and then demolished earlier this century.
Rothes children go to primary school in the village and from there onto Speyside High School in Aberlour
Speyside is not just famous for its distilleries it is also famous for its fishing and Rothes also has a member-owned golf course.
The nearest large town is Elgin, 10 miles to the north on the A941; and Aberdeen is 60 miles away via the A96 for the times when you want to enjoy all that a major city can offer in the way of shopping, eating out, entertainment and culture.
Working in Rothes
Rothes and the surrounding area are heavily involved in the whisky industry; whether actually making the water of life or providing services for those who do.
Forsyths is another famous whisky name in Rothes though they don’t make a drop; they make the stills that make the whisky. The company designs and makes pot and column stills in copper and stainless steel for drinks companies around the world. All this whisky attracts tourists and the hospitality sector is another major player, as well as land management and agriculture.
