Living in Ross and Cromarty
Where is Ross and Cromarty? Well, that all depends when you are asking that question.
Go back into the early 19th century and it would have included the Isle of Lewis now in the Western Isles; from the end of that century until well into the 20th there was a county of Ross-shire and today there is the Ross and Cromarty area of Highland Council administered by an eponymously-named committee. Start to look at parliamentary boundaries over the centuries and your head will spin.
Boundaries may come and go but what can be agreed upon is a stunning band of countryside from coast-to-coast in the north Highlands, sitting just above Inverness and taking in Ullapool and Applecross on the west over to the Cromarty Firth on the east.
Within this county-sized patch are a host of towns like Dingwall, historically the county town of Ross-shire, and stunning places like Gairloch, Strathpefer and Tain. Fantastic coastal settings, tiny villages, country towns, rich agricultural land, glorious mountains, sea lochs, fresh water lochs – you can take your choice.
Inverness is the nearest large city with its rail link, sleeper train and airport plus major bus and coach routes linking to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. It is just the place when you want to experience the buzz of a big city with all its shopping, mix of restaurants and entertainment and venues for major tours.
Working in Ross and Cromarty
In an area as diverse as this there is a similarly diverse range of job opportunities.
Tourism and hospitality and their support industries are major employers across the full spectrum, from a mountain bothy to a banquet. The outdoor sporting market from golf to stalking and angling are other notable employers. So too are transport companies, both freight and pubic transport. The public sector, in both local government and the NHS is a major employer. Land management and agriculture and forestry supply a steady number of jobs and there is engineering in places like Cromarty and Nigg and for those within commuting distance there is Inverness.
