Living in Tain
Tain is home to the best selling single malt whisky in Scotland, Glenmorangie; said to have been produced at Morangie Farm from the early 18th century; the same water source, the Tarlogie spring is used to this day.
The visitor centre at the distillery is a major tourist attraction as is the town’s 18-hole golf course designed by none other than old Tom Morris himself. These two destinations, plus the stunning views across the Dornoch Firth, the surrounding countryside and its wildlife mean that tourism plays a major role in the town’s economy. Tain is on the Far North Railway Line and with Inverness only 35 miles away some people opt for the slightly longer commute to work in the city as a trade off for living somewhere so stunning.
A massive £45 million investment in education in the town is in progress; Tain Royal Academy is the secondary school, which takes pupils from the town’s two primary schools, Craighill and Knockbreck. Tain Academy offers some Gaelic medium education and courses but the new building will replace the existing Tain Royal Academy and Community Complex, Craighill and Knockbreck primary schools and Gaelic Nursery, St Duthus Special School and Tain Nursery.
Jobs in Tain
The hospitality sector and tourism are major employers in the area but land management and agriculture and its support services also play a role; barley for Glenmorangie is supplied by Highland Grain Ltd, a co-operative of farmers. With more than 80 members it is a significant supplier of malting barley to the whisky industry.
