This is one of the major players in the UK economy and its quality is taken very seriously. There is a wide range of organisations overseeing standards and staff training.
There is a career structure you can tap into which will take you from a holiday job as a kitchen porter right up to an award-winning chef; this is an industry where you can enter with minimum qualifications, gain experience and train as you progress.
It is also an industry where your knowledge and qualifications will be rewarded and not necessarily in a kitchen, behind a reception desk or waiting tables. This is a sector which stands or falls on its supply-chain and logistics and employees who can make sure that the right people and the right products are ready when needed can command very high salaries indeed.
Jobs behind the scene are matched by jobs front of house, or customer-facing. Call it what you will, the clue is in the title: hospitality is about being hospitable and this is one job market where your personality and people skills can shine through and take you right to the top.
Your skills are easily portable; you can travel the world because the languages of good food and a warm welcome are global.
And you can be earning a living while actually travelling – just ask the air stewards and staff cooking and serving food on luxury cruise ships.
