Have you reached the point in your career where you are looking for a new challenge, one which also brings lots of opportunities? Then this post may be the opportunity for you.

Mental Health Services in Shetland are undergoing a period of change and development.  There has been significant investment in the service over the last 2 years with additional Psychology, Pharmacy and Nursing team members.  There is a GP with Special Interest in Dual Diagnosis within the team.  We now have an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist to also work in General Adult Psychiatry with the option of a Clinical Director role.

The Mental Health Services are responsible for the promotion of mental health and wellbeing as well as the provision of primary and secondary mental health care, integrated with social work and social care, to the people of Shetland. There are close working arrangements with mental health services in NHS Grampian, and the post-holder would be expected to maintain those links not only for on and off island service provision, but also for their own development and supervision.

As a Consultant Psychiatrist, you will provide clinical leadership for Mental Health services within Shetland, ensuring that a modern, responsive service is provided for patients and clients of the service in the local community, via NHS Shetlands General Hospital settings, and via inpatient services delivered in partnership with NHS Grampian.

We welcome applicants with experience in the following areas:

  • Community Mental Health
  • Substance Misuse
  • Older Adults

There will be opportunities to be involved with clinical teaching, governance and peer support locally and within NHS Grampian and other island boards, there may also be the possibility to be involved in undertaking research with the University of Aberdeen Medical School.

Rise to the challenge and enjoy the opportunity - Shetland is a wonderful place to live and work.  Shetland offers low pollution, low crime, excellent schools, great leisure facilities, unique wildlife and amazing scenery, whilst still only a short flight away from the UK mainland.  To find out more about living and working in Shetland go to www.shetland.org
