Full-time, Part-time and/or Job-Share Opportunity

The Solicitor is responsible for providing a wide range of legal services, as part of the Governance and Law section, to the Council and its directorates.

The range of services may include the following:

  • To provide advice and assistance to maintain high standards of decision-making and good governance within the Council, including attending at meetings of the Council and its committees.
  • To develop areas of specialist expertise, in specific local authority functions as directed by the manager, with the associated advisory and drafting work in these specialist areas;
  • To represent the Council at Court, Arbitration, Tribunal, Enquiries and Hearings regarding e.g. actions for payment, reparation, interdicts, recovery of heritable property, actions relating to protection of children and vulnerable adults, staffing appeals and industrial tribunals. In this connection there would be a requirement to deal professionally with those who need to be treated sensitively;

Requirements

  • The grade of this post is I/J/K/L
  • This post is not career graded - your salary and career progression will depend on your experience and qualifications
  • Salary shown in the advert is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of £2,742 per annum
  • Permanent Full-time, Part-time and/or Job-Share Contract, 52.18 weeks per year
  • Preferred candidates will be required undertake a Standard Disclosure check prior to a formal offer of employment being made
  • A relocation package does not apply to this post
  • We will pay interview expenses from within Shetland
  • We are happy to talk flexible working
