Living in Keith
Always remember when in Keith that ‘yer nae glaikit if ye spik it’ and be very proud of the town’s linguistic, cultural and musical heritage - as befits the honour of being named the first ever ‘Scots Toun’ in celebration of the Doric, the dialect of the Scots language spoken in the region.
Add to this a traditional music and song association which has run a festival for more than 40 years and you can see why Keith is a great community in which to make your home. The A96 links Keith to Inverness (55 miles) and Aberdeen (50) along with a rail link to both and this slightly longer commute makes Keith a town with attractive property prices, especially for people who work off-shore.
It goes without saying that in this part of Scotland there is whisky and there are distilleries.
In Keith itself there are Strathmill, Glenkeith and Strathisla, one of the oldest in the Highlands and the home of Chivas Regal, with Auchroisk, Aultmore and Glentauchers close by.
The distilleries and the Keith and Dufftown Railway, an 11-mile historic railway running between the two towns sees Keith with a growing hospitality sector.
There is also work in engineering and agriculture; the annual Keith Country Show, held at Seafield Park, is a big event in the farming calendar of north-east Scotland.
Keith’s location means that Aberdeen and Inverness are within easy reach when you want to feel the buzz of a big city with its shopping, entertainment and culture. Both cities have airports plus ferry services from Aberdeen, and both have Caledonian Sleeper trains to London.
The town’s two primary schools send their pupils on to Keith Grammar School.
Keith has a newly-refurbished swimming pool complex and a large sports hall.
With keen property prices and a good core of schools, shops and community organisations, the steady wealth of the whisky industry and a growing cultural tourism sector, Keith is a popular choice for young families.
