NHS Tayside Blood Sciences labratory provides a high quality, analytical, interpretive and advisory diagnostic service, within the Ninewells campus. The Department is accredited to ISO 15189 standards by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

The laboratory is 24/7 providing Biochemistry, Haematology and Blood transfusion analysis, rapid Covid swabs for red pathway and supports Point of care (gas analyser/ glucose / ketone).

We are looking for a member of staff that can demonstrate initiative, lone working, and flexibility and have proven ability to support further development of the service. You will be in a post that is essential to the delivery of all laboratory services within the Ninewells Core Biochemistry lab.  You will work with a considerable degree of autonomy and have the responsibility for providing professional, scientific and technical leadership, and will be managing a team of experienced BMS staff.

This postholder supervises the Core Chemistry section to deliver training to ISO accreditation standards. The department also holds IBMS Training lab approval. You will also be expected to liaise closely with the Service Manager to support the training of all grades of laboratory staff.

As the Senior BMS postholder you will be expected to work closely with the other senior BMS, and the Blood Sciences Associate Service Managers to ensure continued UKAS accreditation; this post involves Out of Hours working, weekend, and some early evening and Public Holiday duties.You must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and must at a minimum be working towards M.Sc. or FIBMS.  A Completed specialist portfolio in Biochemistry is mandatory as well as at least 2 years post registration experience.

Hours 37 per week

NHS Scotland is reducing their full time working week from 37.5 to 37 hours per week from 1 April 2024 but with no change in pay.  This reduction will also be applied pro rata for part time staff.  This advert and any subsequent offer/contract of employment therefore reflects the new working hours.  However, as not all service areas will be able to adopt the 37 hour working week immediately from 1 April 2024, you may be required to work up to an additional 30 minutes per week for a temporary period for which you would be paid until the service you are working in changes rosters or working patterns to accommodate the new reduced working week.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Recruiting Board.
