Remote and Rural Island GP

Primary Care Department

Orcades Practice – Stronsay

Salary £91,371 - £104,469 (based on years qualified as a GP) plus 45% enhancement for 24/7 cover

13 weeks (equates to 15.29 weeks includes leave and study)

Permanent

Be a solo working GP in a wider supportive team of GPs and Nurses

Be an important part of a small island community

The surgery on the island of Stronsay are looking for GP/GPs to complete their “small but perfectly formed” team. As a part-time GP you will have the advantages of working in one of the remote cohesive practices with more time for your patients surrounded by beautiful scenery and wildlife. We work in rotation, usually for 3 weeks at a time, and are on call 24/7, with support from a community nurse.

Stronsay is a branch of the Orcades Practice which consists of six single-handed island practices with GPs and nurses providing 24/7 healthcare to the smaller islands of Orkney. Weekly videoconferences enable clinicians to share knowledge and experience to overcome professional isolation and provide strong peer support. Stronsay has a population of approximately 350.  Rotational working allows practitioners to live on island or as far away as South Africa, with blocks of time to work in Primary Care in other areas.

Enhance your GP skills with challenges of pre-hospital emergency care whilst waiting for helicopter evacuation.  Emergency care training with standardised equipment and protocols is provided.

The post will appeal to an experienced GP who will relish the opportunity of providing holistic care in a remote but supported environment. Study and annual leave allocations are built in to allow you to acquire and maintain the skills needed. Accommodation is provided.

Rise to the challenge and enjoy the opportunity, Orkney offers unique wildlife, amazing scenery, and real opportunity to experience a wide range of cultural and sporting activities. There is something for everyone; state-of-the-art leisure facilities, various clubs and societies, and an excellent education system creates our strong community spirit.  To find out more about living and working on the Islands of Orkney go to: https://youtu.be/AD24d9JJLmI

If we have piqued your interest, we would love to hear from you, and are happy to chat about our experiences to see if this might be the job you're looking for. Please contact Stronsay GP on 01857 616321 or Gina Tait, Isles Network of Care Operational Manager on 01856 888022

Successful candidates will be invited to come to Orkney meet the island communities and your new colleagues.
