We are seeking a Building Standards Officer who will assist in the delivery of the building standards service to the Council and people of Orkney. Specifically securing the health, safety, welfare and convenience of persons in or about buildings and furthering the conservation of fuel, power and sustainable construction.

You will contribute to the successful delivery of Council and service targets, objectives and national Performance Framework criteria, whilst monitoring personal workload and maintaining appropriate records to achieve appropriate performance indicators and timescales. You will provide professional advice on building standards matters and will assist the Service Manager Building Standards to fulfill the Council’s verification responsibilities.

You will have working knowledge of the Building Regulations and other legislation related to implementation of the Building Standards function, along with varied experience and understanding of all relevant aspects of the construction industry.

This post is a career graded post and salary placement will be dependent on the qualifications and experience of the individual. You will be qualified in a relevant discipline such as Building Surveying, Construction Management, Architectural Technology, Structural Engineering or have significant experience working in Building Standards. Membership of a relevant body e.g. the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, Chartered Association of Building Engineers or the Chartered Institute of Building may be beneficial but is not essential.

There is a responsibility for the post holder to demonstrate a commitment to quality service delivery through continuous improvement for the benefit of the Service and the organisation.

This post is subject to basic Disclosure Scotland clearance.

You will need to be able to travel efficiently and effectively between various work locations within Orkney to meet the operational requirements of the Service.
